24 Nov Walking Together for HIV prevention
Mpumalanga, November, 2014 |Established in 2002, today marks the 13th annual Sports Heroes Walk Against Aids (SHWAA). Nine athletes will take to the streets of Mpumalanga Province for eight days covering a total distance of 499km in an effort to raise funds and promote HIV/AIDS awareness.
Atomo Diagnostics (Atomo) is once again pleased to announce its involvement with the Sports Heroes Walk Against AIDS. This year, Atomo has partnered with Right to Care Health Services to provide HIV community testing at every town that the Sports Heroes will walk through.
Earlier this year Atomo successfully launched a test for the detection of HIV 1&2. At this year’s 17th Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA), AtomoRapidTM HIV was awarded Best in Show, in recognition of its innovative all-in-one design that makes testing simpler, safer and more accurate.
“As influential and iconic individuals, the athletes play a major role in inspiring and encouraging people to know their HIV status and to adopt healthy behaviours,” said Dr Thembi Xulu, MD of Right to Care Health Services. “As an organisation that treats health seriously we are proud to be partnering with SHWAA to test and educate the public and as we get an opportunity to dispel the dangerous myths which fuel the spread and stigma surrounding HIV.
Founder and CEO of Atomo, John Kelly said, “Atomo is committed to curbing the spread of HIV infection and we are really happy to be supporting this initiative. People need to be educated and empowered to prevent infection and also to fight the stigma associated with HIV and Aids.”
The walk which will end on 1st December in Emalahleni occurs during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, will include the likes of Sports Heroes Hilton Langenhoven, Amanda Dlamini, Sindisiwe Gumede, Desiree Ellis, Evelina Tshabalala, Josiah Thugwane, Bruce Ramokadi, Mzwandile Stokololo, Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu, Zintle Sinqe (daughter of Zithulele Sinqe) as well as the founder of the SHWAA Ms Cynthia Tshaka.
