26 Feb While we wait for a vaccine, rapid tests could help keep life near to normal
It’s a sign of how well Australia has handled the pandemic that a single positive case in the community will make national headlines, while in many other countries thousands of people are dying from the disease every day.
Our hotel quarantine system for returned travellers and our free testing and contact tracing regime for members of the community are central to that success. Anyone who has read the extensive lists of new exposure sites during an outbreak knows just how thorough the contact tracing process is.
But it’s possible those lists would be shorter – for a good reason – if we supplemented our current testing arrangements with rapid antigen testing in key risk areas, detecting and isolating infections even earlier in the process.
